Men's Ministry

The Men’s Group is a chance to get together and share in different activities and enjoy a bit of male bonding.

There are currently five aspects as summarised below. But we are open to new ideas. We strive to include all men of all ages in our activities. Some men participate in some aspects; some participate in all aspects. You are free to come and go as you choose.

Study

Up to about 20 of us meet every Sunday night during school term between 8 pm – 9 pm in order to study the Bible.   Most often we study a book in the Bible, but we also study themes and topical questions.  We cover both old and new testament, the twin aims being to unpick the essential meaning of the text and work out how it should be applied to our lives in a practical sense in the context in which we live. Sometimes we use DVD based material such as Timothy Keller's series and the Australian TV documentary “the Christ Files” exploring the historical evidence concerning the Gospel writings, including the earliest manuscripts.

Social

We meet socially, both as a means of getting to know each other better and as a means of including new men in the life of Christ Church.  Almost monthly we meet for dinner, sometimes with a short talk or discussion.  Average attendance is in excess of a dozen.   From time to time we also host breakfasts with a speaker, BBQs and arrange walks. We also have joint events periodically with men from other local churches. Sporting events (such as World Cup matches) are now shown on the large screen in Church and tend to be initiated by the Men's Group, though open to all.

Service

Men like action, and we are not exceptional in this regard.  We like to be of service to the Christ Church community and beyond.   Most years, some of us take part in the Guildford-wide “Ready-4-Action” weekend or do a Besom project in the community; and a group of us previously refurbished the upstairs of Church House. We also help with the gardening, DIY and much more.

Support

We have a desire to provide support to the men of Christ Church and beyond and this is an area we would like to develop further. We are open to new ideas but past activities have included arranging a quiet half-day periodically, involving study, quiet reflection and prayer. We have also run a pilot “God at Work” course and, following a study entitled “Men in a post Feminist world”, instigated a Marriage Course. Specific pastoral care has been provided for men who have lost their jobs or experienced employment related issues.

Starters

Periodically we host an Alpha or Christianity Explored course purely for men. Indeed the current form of the Men’s Group originated from an Alpha course held at Christ Church in the early 2000s.

Mens' Group meets every Sunday evening in a group members home.  We welcome you to get in touch and join in, if you are interested contact Stephen Hofmeyr or Ray Bell.
